Saint Patrick's first church was a barn gifted by a local chieftain

Saul church was the place where Saint Patrick set out to convert the Irish to Christianity. Gifted to him by Dichu the site is named Saul from the anglicized Sabhail meaning barn.

​

Saint Patrick later returned to Saul and it is here that he died surrounded by his followers. The ruins of the old abbey can be seen in the churchyard around the Mortuary House.

The present Church of Ireland was built to commemorate the 1500th anniversary of Patrick's arrival. Many donations for its building came from Catholics in New York.
